The Life Of Rob Gordon

Oh Rangers!

I was lucky (really?) enough to catch three of the four Rangers game at Yankee Stadium this past weekend, and what an experience it was. I won't comment on the games themselves, because the Rangers suck, but rather, the experience of the three different games. Rooting for the opposing team in Yankee Stadium can be a bit tumultous any way you look at it, and i had the pleasure of experiencing this in different parts of the stadium itself.

Game 1 (two of the four game series, I missed the Thursday night game): Rob, Rachel and myself found our way to the left field bleachers, decked out in our Ranger attire. We got some stares cheering on the visiting team, but nothing too menacing. No rude comments, no threats, no heckling. Overall, a fine experience.

Game 2: Rachel and I had seats in the right field bleachers for the Saturday afternoon game, and we showed up a tad late, top of the 2nd with the Yanks already up 2-0. I exited the concourse to a section filled with the die hards of the die hards. Immediately the boos began and the chanting of "Texas sucks!" I heard a few "steers and queers" comments as well as a long list of insults and heckling as we made our way to our seats. Looking at the crowd surrounding us, I knew we were in for a long afternoon. These guys were all season ticket holders, who even had jerseys made advertising their section number. Die hards. The insults never stopped, even when Texas scored two in the top of the ninth to tie the game and end Marino Rivera's streak of 31 consecutive saves. It of course didn't end with Bernie Williams' two run homer in the bottom of the 11th to win the game.

Game 3: Went with Nick, Xtal and Sarah and sat in the lower level on the third base side. Great view of the game and the two rain delays. No one seemed to even notice I was rooting for the opposing team. They were all too busy chatting away, much like Sarah and Cristalle. Funny how the people that can afford the best seats seem to be the least interested in the game. Again, another Ranger loss for a four game sweep by New York. Bleh
